About the Author

Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) is a towering figure in English literature, renowned for both his novels and poetry. Born in rural Dorset, Hardy was deeply influenced by the landscapes of Wessex, which feature prominently in his works. While his novels, including Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Far From the Madding Crowd, brought him fame, Hardy considered himself first and foremost a poet.

His poetry reflects his philosophical outlook, marked by a blend of realism and skepticism about life’s meaning. Despite the somber tones of much of his verse, Hardy’s work captures the beauty of existence and the resilience of the human spirit. His poetry had a significant influence on 20th-century poets, including W.H. Auden and Philip Larkin, cementing his legacy as a major literary figure.
